Sunday 15th September
So, we had decided to stay one day in Padstow.
The weather is still nice.
Eric and I tackle one of the other problems on the boat: water seeps through the deck hatch of the forward cabin.
The repair consists of letting a miracle product flow along the joint, in order to plug the leak. The result seems conclusive, Bruno and Christian can finally sleep dry!
The two brothers, for their part, devote themselves to their activity, if not favorite, at least repetitive: food shopping.
After the meal, we take the bus to the seaside town of Newquay.
This decision is not the result of chance. It turns out that Bruno and Christian had been there in their youth during a hitchhiking road trip, back in 1973.
But this pilgrimage has a specific objective: to taste a Knickerbockerglory, a very elaborate ice cream of which they have an imperishable memory and which Christian absolutely insists on making us taste.
The bus ride is a change from navigation, we admire the surrounding landscape and hold our breath when the bus passes other vehicles on the narrow roads of the Cornish countryside.
This mission will take us through the streets of Newquay, and on pretty paths along the coves, among the broom and the beautiful houses.
But not a shadow of any Knickerbockerglory!
Despite several inquiries with the locals: “Where can you eat a Knickerbockerglory in Newquay ?“, we have to make do with ordinary ice cream sundaes, swallowed at top speed so as not to miss the last bus to Padstow.
These wanderings could only end with a good meal in a Padstow pub.
We choose the Harbour Inn, where we have the pleasure of dining with the accompaniment of a dynamic and friendly pianist, who to Christian’s great joy knows all the Beatles’ songs.
But the height of the story…
…is that the dessert menu includes… the famous Knickerbockerglory!
Unfortunately, to Christian’s great disappointment, our stomachs are already too full and we cowardly give up on living this unique experience.
A heavy downpour accompanies us as we return to spend the night on Paradox.
