{"id":44,"date":"2022-05-03T21:25:00","date_gmt":"2022-05-03T21:25:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/leblanc.pl\/china_blue_en\/?page_id=44"},"modified":"2025-01-17T09:06:00","modified_gmt":"2025-01-17T09:06:00","slug":"chapter-10-last-sail-in-england","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/leblanc.pl\/china_blue_en\/index.php\/the-whole-story\/chapter-10-last-sail-in-england\/","title":{"rendered":"Chapter 10 &#8211; Last sail in England!"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><u>From Newquay Bay to Newlyn &#8211; Around Land\u2019s End<\/u><\/h2>\n<p>Having spent a peaceful night at anchor in <em>Newquay Bay<\/em>, we departed for <em>Newlyn<\/em>, <em>Cornwall, Penzance Bay<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>At 07h00, we weighed anchor, still manually (John and I did!).<\/p>\n<p>And, once again, the wind was totally absent.<br \/>\nWe resigned to motor all the way; we had no choice.<br \/>\nAt least, we were assured to maintain a good and predictable speed.<\/p>\n<p>Our course was south-west, leaving the shore 2 to 3 miles on portside, to the west cardinal of <em>The Stones<\/em>, past <em>St Ives<\/em>, then rounding <em>The Wra<\/em>, <em>Cape Cornwall<\/em> and <em>The Brisons<\/em>, to take a southern route to <em>Land\u2019s End<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The wind came up, unfortunately against us. We kept motoring, having given up the idea of sailing.<\/p>\n<p>At 13h00, we sneaked between the <em>Longships<\/em> rocks and <em>Land\u2019s End<\/em>, which John saluted with respect, while I was finishing my lunch at the tiller.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_620\" style=\"width: 450px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/leblanc.pl\/china_blue\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/land_end_light.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-620\" class=\"fancybox-auto wp-image-620\" title=\"Land's End\" src=\"https:\/\/leblanc.pl\/china_blue\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/land_end_light-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Land's End\" width=\"440\" height=\"248\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-620\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Land&#8217;s End<\/p><\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<p><em><strong>Newlyn<\/strong> <\/em>is mostly a fishing boats harbour.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_617\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/leblanc.pl\/china_blue\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/newlyn2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-617\" class=\"wp-image-617 size-medium\" title=\"Newlyn Harbour\" src=\"https:\/\/leblanc.pl\/china_blue\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/newlyn2-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Newlyn\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-617\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Newlyn<\/p><\/div>\n<p>We were only authorized to enter provided we declared having no cats nor dogs or other animals on board (though I don\u2019t really understand why, considering the impressive quantity of seagulls established all over the place). We didn\u2019t mention we still had a few live worms from John\u2019s fishing equipment.<\/p>\n<p>At 16h30, John was at the tiller as we entered the harbour walls, looking for the berth we had been allocated.<br \/>\nI was busy preparing mooring lines and fenders, not looking around, when he hastily called me to negotiate the manoeuvre. He suddenly didn\u2019t want to be responsible of steering China Blue.<\/p>\n<p>I jumped to the tiller, looked up, to discover huge fishing boats all around, a tight empty space on portside at the pontoon that we had almost passed by, with John shouting at me \u201c<em>It\u2019s there, it\u2019s there!<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_618\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/leblanc.pl\/china_blue\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/moored_newlyn.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-618\" class=\"wp-image-618 size-medium\" title=\"China Blue in Newlyn\" src=\"https:\/\/leblanc.pl\/china_blue\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/moored_newlyn-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"China Blue in Newlyn\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-618\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">China Blue in Newlyn<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A miracle happened. I don\u2019t exactly know how, but by an intuitive-luck-inspired combination of pushing tiller, reversing throttle, pulling tiller, full forward and full reverse again, I managed to park China Blue in her designated berth in a method somewhat resembling what you\u2019d call a Handbrake Parallel Park.<br \/>\nWithout hitting anything!<\/p>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\"><\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<p>And there we were, in <em>Newlyn<\/em>, our very last stop in the UK.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_619\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/leblanc.pl\/china_blue\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/newlyn1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-619\" class=\"wp-image-619 size-medium\" title=\"Newlyn\" src=\"https:\/\/leblanc.pl\/china_blue\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/newlyn1-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Newlyn\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-619\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Newlyn<\/p><\/div>\n<p>We celebrated our last night in Wales at the <strong><em>Star Inn<\/em><\/strong>, a very local and pleasant pub right outside the harbour.<br \/>\nAgain, I could enjoy the kindness of the people and their welcoming attitude, and have nice talks with interesting characters, like <strong><em>Jacqueline<\/em> <\/strong>and <strong><em>Ben<\/em><\/strong>, who are pictured here.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_615\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/leblanc.pl\/china_blue\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/bengunn.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-615\" class=\"wp-image-615 size-medium\" title=\"Jacqueline and Ben\" src=\"https:\/\/leblanc.pl\/china_blue\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/bengunn-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Jacqueline and Ben\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-615\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jacqueline and Ben<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong><em>Ben Gunn<\/em><\/strong> is an artist who revealed itself very late, and whose paintings decorate some walls of the pub (<a href=\"https:\/\/bengunn-newlyn-blog.tumblr.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/bengunn-newlyn-blog.tumblr.com\/<\/a>).<br \/>\n<em>Jacqueline<\/em> is a joyful woman, with the peculiar and rare characteristic of wearing my mother\u2019s first name.<\/p>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\"><\/div>\n<p>After the pub and to satisfy John\u2019s alarmingly growing hunger, we ordered food from a Chinese takeaway conveniently located next door, and had dinner on board China Blue.<br \/>\nChinese dinner on a Chinese rig, everything was in order.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_616\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/leblanc.pl\/china_blue\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/newlyn_fog.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-616\" class=\"wp-image-616 size-medium\" title=\"Foggy Newlyn harbour\" src=\"https:\/\/leblanc.pl\/china_blue\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/newlyn_fog-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Foggy Newlyn harbour\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-616\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Foggy Newlyn harbour<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The next morning, I was quite worried when discovering the thick fog that bathed the harbour, and had nothing to do with the beers from the night before.
